After a career spanning 70 years in various roles—beauty queen, serious actress, comedienne and most recently a ballroom dancer—Cloris Leachman still pleases the crowd and steals the scene wherever she appears.
What’s her secret to a long and happy life? She says, “Being clean… and licking people.” What!? For an explanation, watch this video posted on the Huffington Post ten years ago. It was taken from her interview with Brian Kilmeade on “Fox and Friends” when she came on the show to promote her Fox sitcom “Raising Hope.”
And now, at the age of 94, this self-proclaimed vegetarian seems to have barely aged in the last ten years as she looks back on her favorite movie roles in this recent post on DoYouRemember.com.
Cloris’ popularity soared when she appeared on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2008. At the time she was 82 years old, full of vigor, funny as ever and apparently still capable of some thigh-splitting moves as she demonstrated one night at the judges’ table.
MSNBC.com contributor, Ree Hines, commented on her appearance on “Dancing with the Stars” in a 9/23/2008 posting, “But for once, the night wasn’t just about early finale favorites and dancing duds. Thanks to one veteran celebrity, entertainment value actually trumped all the fancy footwork. Sure, she’s not going to bring home the mirror-ball bling, but with nine Emmys, a Golden Globe and an Oscar already under her belt, Cloris Leachman doesn’t even need it. The 82-year-old actress hit the floor with new pro Corky Ballas (dancer Mark’s dad), and proved sometimes even in a dance competition, moves are overrated.”
So what does Cloris teach us about healthy aging? More than being a lovable wacko who many of us hope to emulate, she demonstrates that humor and gusto go a long way toward creating a long and happy life. Oh yes, and no eating turkeys!
