3 Ways to Detox Ayurveda-Style

3 Ways to Detox Ayurveda-Style

Cleaning the body on a regular basis is a fundamental principle of Ayurveda. We live in a world filled with toxins–environmental, chemical, food additives, xenoestrogens (estrogen imitators) and electro-magnetic frequencies–to name just a few. Yet it is the rare physician who prescribes cleaning out the body to remove toxins that have built up over time.

The body is, of course, quite capable of cleaning itself with our support. Still, it doesn’t hurt to give it a little help from time to time, particularly when the odds are stacked against it. Detoxing your body THE RIGHT WAY on a regular basis can, in fact, mean the difference between perfect health and struggling with aches and pains, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances and even autoimmune conditions such as fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, lupus, arthritis and cancer.

SVAyurveda teaches that there are three basic ways to keep the body toxin-free.

#1 – The first is avoiding the intake of toxins in the first place, a task often easier said than done. Everything from common household products and food preservatives to body care products and cosmetics can conspire to overload our liver and organs and contribute to hormonal imbalances. Consider the fact that some of the biggest offenders are items we use on our skin, the largest organ in our bodies. Seemingly innocent products, like laundry detergent, dryer sheets and hand soap, are absorbed directly into our bloodstream. Therefore, we want to use the products with the fewest toxins. Knowing which brands are the healthiest, however, can get complex, so I’ve included a list of helpful web links you can reference before your next trip to the grocery store

#2 – Preparing the organs and channels of the body so they are strong enough to handle the rigors of toxic modern life is the second way to detox. The body is designed to cleanse itself, and it does a great job of it…when we follow the laws of nature. The healthier the liver, kidneys and digestive tract, the better able you will be to withstand toxic attacks without getting sick or contracting major diseases. There is no way to avoid all toxins, so please don’t drive yourself and everyone around you crazy trying to do so. We just need to be as strong as possible so our bodies naturally remove toxins taken in on a daily basis. For seasonal cleanses, there are also proper ways to prepare the organs and channels of the body. Without properly prepping the body, the tiny micro-channels may shrink, clog or get blocked as a result of the cleanse, wreaking more havoc than not detoxing at all. For this reason, it is important to pick the right cleanse and prepare for it properly.

#3 – Lastly, when toxins are released, they can react aggressively, causing inflammation, burning and rashes. In Ayurveda, we recommend the use of neutralizing herbs to pacify the toxins and alkalize the channels. These herbs are helpful to take as part of your normal routine. They are even more important when you are encouraging the release of an abundance of toxins during a scheduled detox. And be careful of hearsay; the best herbs for you may not be the ones hyped on the Internet.
