Good Vibrations – Too Much of a Good Thing? (Part I)

Good Vibrations – Too Much of a Good Thing? (Part I)

Too much of a good thing? How is that possible?

Well, can we agree that we are exposed to an increasingly high level of stimuli in our busy, media-filled lives? Particularly here in Los Angeles? (If you don’t think so, wait a few years; as people age, depending upon their body type (Ayurvedic constitution), they often find that exposure to all sorts of stimuli becomes more challenging).

Of course, not all stimuli is bad for you; in fact, some sounds and sensory stimuli are actually healing. Before I address how to use sound, in particular, to heal, let’s take a look at how electromagnetic vibrations can influence our physiology.

Electromagnetic wave patterns act as a guidance or force for what happens physiologically in the cell. In short, when you change a field pattern, you change matter, and when you change matter, you change a field pattern.

There are over 100,000 such reactions in cells every second. After all, our connective tissue (collagen) is an electrical conductor. Our blood carries an electrical charge. Our bones conduct electricity. Our heart is an electrically-driven oscillator, and our brain waves ARE electrical frequencies. But DNA is the most important crystalline field in the interaction with matter, and most bio-photon emissions come from DNA.

When we consider all of the electromagnetic waves moving through our bodies, we begin to understand how it is possible to modify cells in response to subtle, vibrational environmental cues.¹ In fact, the fundamental principles of Ayurveda are based upon just this: re-harmonizing the vibrations in the body by changing the qualities and energetics we are exposed to from foods, colors, gems, oils, aromas, body treatments and sounds.

Now, at this point most scientists out there are screaming at their computers that sound waves are not considered electromagnetic waves. And they are right. (Deep breath).  Sound waves differ because, unlike electromagnetic waves that can propagate in a vacuum and move at high velocity, sound waves move slower and require a medium of some sort, such as gas or water.

It just so happens that our bodies are 60-70% water, however. And this water in our bodies serves many purposes. One of these is to act as a medium to relay tiny frequencies of information of DNA from one cell to another and within the cell itself. With well over half of our body’s composition comprised of water, it’s easy to see how all vibrations, including sound, can affect our cellular health.

In fact, certain frequencies have been shown to assist cells in absorbing water more efficiently, thus contributing to better cellular function and purification. In 1998 Dr. Glen Rein of the Quantum Biology Research Lab in New York performed experiments with in vitro DNA. Four styles of music, including Sanskrit and Gregorian chants that utilize the 528 Hz frequency, were converted to scalar audio waves and played via a CD player to test tubes containing in vitro DNA. The effects of the music were determined by measuring the absorption of UV light in the samples after an hour of exposure to the music.

The results from one experiment indicated that classical music caused a 1.1 % increase in absorption, and rock music caused a 1.8% decrease in absorption, indicating no effect of either. Gregorian chants, on the other hand, caused a 5.0% and 9.1% increase in absorption in two separate experiments. Sanskrit chanting caused a similar 8.2% and 5.8% effect in two separate experiments. Thus, both types of sacred chanting music produced a large unwinding effect on DNA,² which resulted in greater absorption of UV light.

While some people think the idea of using sound to heal sounds hokey, it is really simple physics. If you were to take two tuning forks that were on the same frequency, say 110 hz. each, and hit one so it begins vibrating, the other tuning fork would soon begin vibrating of its own accord. It would match the frequency of its partner. This is called entrainment. When I use tuning forks with patients, the same thing essentially happens; the water in the patient’s body begins to resonate to the frequency of the tuning fork, and that signal is carried throughout the body. In the DNA, entrainment can have a profound impact on cellular growth and expression.

Solfeggio tuning forks are based on the premise that, mathematically, there are six tones that resonate with the human body. While modern music no longer relies upon this musical scale, there has been a resurgence of it in the healing community. The various frequencies in the Solfeggio scale are as follows:

  • Ut – 396 Hz – turning grief into joy, liberating guilt and fear
  • Re – 417 Hz – undoing situations and facilitating change
  • Mi – 528 Hz – transformation and miracles (DNA repair)
  • Fa – 639 Hz – reconnecting and balancing relationships
  • Sol – 741 Hz – solving problems, expressions/solutions
  • La – 852 Hz – awakening intuition, returning to spiritual order³

Whether you believe in healing sound frequencies or not, you can’t argue with what works. We all know that music has a profound impact on how we feel, and listening to positive music can truly make us feel better.

Since direct perception is always the best way to learn and understand something new, I’ve provided some links below so you can try it for yourself. Enjoy!
