Roses have been a symbol of love and romance for thousands of years. In Ayurveda, they

have a special affinity for the heart chakra, bestowing unconditional love, spiritual connection and mental clarity.

When inhaled, the aroma affects the central nervous system, encouraging self confidence, hope and the power to fight back. Furthermore, the essential oil of roses can be blended with soothing carrier oils like Sweet Almond to treat spasms, inflammation, bloating, wrinkles, trauma, stress, nervous tension, sexual debilities, headaches, infections and skin ulcers.

Ultimately, all of these healing properties stem from the energetic sweetness and coolness of this beautiful flower. Healers used the rose to cool a blazing pitta dosha—the mind-body force associated with fire, heat, anger, ambition, and stress. Although some people are prone to pitta imbalances all the time, most feel its effects in summer when this dosha is the strongest.

When it gets hot outside, roses are certainly one of this Pitta’s favorite remedies. I use it as a spritzer of rose water mixed half and half with distilled water sprayed over my face and neck. It immediately cools me down. I use the same mix with an eye cup to flush my eyes out at the end of a long, hot day. While you may experience a little stinging initially, believe me when I say it will soon cool and soothe the dry, fragile tissues of your eyes. It’s also a great practice after too much computer work or general eye strain caused from too much intensity in a day.

There are numerous ways to use roses to cool down, relax and restore one’s faith in self and mankind. Here are just a few. Check out the links at the bottom of this article for several more. Enjoy!

• Use approximately 3 drops (it doesn’t take much) in a diffuser and inhale the aroma to soothe allergies or asthma, calm anger, alleviate depression, help with headaches, and lighten feelings of resentment, jealousy, and grief.

• Rose petal preserves can help alleviate the symptoms of PMS by reducing irritability and menstrual cramps. Rose petals can also soothe an ailing stomach by reducing nausea, lessening hyperacidity, and healing stomach ulcers.

• Make a facial mask with warming saffron and cooling rose petals to coax all skin types into balance. Crush 1/2 cup of organic red rose petals into a paste with a mortar and pestle and mix with 1 tablespoon of honey and a pinch of saffron. Apply all over your face and neck for 10 minutes before your shower. Wash off with cool or lukewarm water. Use twice a week.
